5 Tips For Creating a Kitchen That Flows

When it comes to organizing your kitchen you need to consider how best to make it flow so it works with your lifestyle. In other words, consider what works and what doesn't in the current set up of your kitchen and come up with some better alternatives.

Closets have gone from an ignored portion of the house to a home selling point in the last few years. People are spending tens of thousands of dollars on their closet systems and even turning whole rooms into closets, which are really more like posh boutique dressing rooms. Professional closet designers report all sorts of lavish requests for closet designs, including espresso machines, pedicure chairs, refrigerators, mini bars and more. Couches, chairs, granite counter tops and motorized shoe racks aren't at all uncommon. You can use some of these ideas to turn your boring closet into a thing of beauty and convenience, even if you don't have a lot of room or money to work with.

Just adding a few conveniences will make your closet more usable. If you are starting with a standard hanging bar and high shelf, you may need to add some basics before you really deck it out. You can inexpensively add wooden shelves if you do it yourself. Building shelves is not all that hard. You will need precise measurements when you buy your wood. You may be able to get it cut at the hardware store when you purchase it, but you may have to have, rent or borrow a miter saw.

Design a closet system that fits your space and meets your needs by pulling everything out and categorizing it. This part can be really fun. Purchase a stud finder if you don't have one already, and make sure that you secure all shelves into studs.

You may have space between studs to add recessed shelves, which look really nice and add a lot of storage without using any space. An interesting drawer pull will make your closet unique. Drawer organizers can make a perfect place to store rolled ties, jewelry and more. You can even install a child lock on the drawer if you need to store valuables or dangerous items. A magnetic entry child lock cannot be seen from the outside or opened by an adult without the magnet entry key.

You can install valet bars, baskets, multiple level bars, shoe organizers and more to finish out your custom closet. Top it all off with some sturdy wood hangers that match your stain. How To Plan The Inside Of A New Wardrobe To Get The Best Storage For You

Wardrobes these days come in a vast range of styles, from contemporary to classic, from modern lacquer & glass to wood. But regardless of style a good wardrobe will provide you with something practical as well as beautiful. Once you have decided on the external finish of your wardrobe it's time to start planning how you are going to set it up to ensure you have got the right sort of storage for your needs..

Firstly, carry out an inventory of everything in your existing bedroom wardrobe. Make a list of the numbers of different types of clothing you have, starting with long garments like full length dresses & coats, then list slightly shorter items like shorter dresses & coats as well as full length skirts and long tops, finally list your shirts, shirts, trousers & short tops. Look at how much rail space the various items take up at the moment & whether you would like more room. If everything is crammed in then you are going to need much more rail space in your new wardrobe.

Once you have listed everything that is hanging up its time to look at your folded items, including items not currently in your wardrobe that you will be putting in your new wardrobe, including jeans, sweatshirts, T shirts, & jumpers. Take a look at how many drawers you are currently using for underwear, socks & tights & the size of the drawers.

Make a full list of all of your shoes, boots etc, putting an asterisk next to any long boots or shoes that wont fit on a shoe rack, or shoes/boots you want to store with shoe trees in them.

Last but not least take a look at the accessories you own, including belts, ties, scarves & anything else you would like to put inside your wardrobe, & add them to the list, listing the number of each different type. Are they hanging or folded?

Once you know how many items of clothing you have, & what type they are its time to think about any extra items you might want to store, for example bed linen, towels, blankets etc. Will you want to put your laundry basket inside? Think about how often you will need to access the items on this list. Daily? Once a week? Once a year?

Then its time to look at your other requirements. Wardrobes these days are flexible & it is possible to integrate a dressing table, or a writing/computer desk. Will you want lighting in your wardrobe & if so, what type? What about items like makeup, hair dryers, styling sprays etc? Will you want mobile phone chargers in it? If you want to have electrical items in your wardrobe you will need to make sure there is a power point on the wall the wardrobe is on.

Once you have done that its time to move to the next stage, working out how much room you actually have & where your wardrobe will go. Take an accurate (not an optimistic!) measurement of the space & allow for skirting boards. Check your ceiling height. You may have much more (or less) room than you thought, & if you are buying a new wardrobe you will want to make the most of the space available. You will need to leave 6 cm spare at the top for installation though. Make a note of any electrical outlets. Make sure the wardrobe isn't covering light switches & isn't in the way of the bedroom door. Look at where the doors & windows are.

Then draw up your wardrobe on graph paper, looking at it from the front. Use an easy scale like one square per 10cm to avoid future confusion. Every wardrobe is a mixture of double & single cabinets, with a double cabinet being approximately 90cm wide for a hinged door wardrobe & 1.2 metres for a sliding door wardrobe, so try & determine how many internal spaces you will have, using 90cm for a double & 45cm for a single as the minimum.

Each cupboard can fit either 1 rail for long garments or 2 rails for shorter garments, so using your inventory work out how many rails you will need & where they will go (roughly). Don't worry, there will be room for other items, most wardrobes are at least 2.2 metres high. If you have blankets etc that you only need occasionally put a shelf at the top of the wardrobe & hang the top rail from it. You will also need to think about your own height & how high you can reach easily. & make sure your top hanging rails are not too high.

You will usually be supplied with a shelf & 2 hanging rails per cupboard, & each hanging rail is fixed underneath a shelf, so you may want extra shelves for storage of folded items if you are using the first shelf near the top of the wardrobe. Shelves are always useful, but bear in mind that the wardrobe is 60cm deep, so if you put too many shelves in, & have them too close together you will not be able to see what's actually on the shelves!

It is also possible to put vertical dividers into the middle of the wardrobe cupboards, which fit either the whole length or half way up with a shelf on top. These can have shelves across both halves so provide several cubbyholes, useful for handbags & other items that don't go in a drawer & don't really hang.

Now its time to look at what special fittings will go inside the wardrobe. If you are buying a good quality wardrobe you will have a wide choice. These options usually only fit in 90cm plus size cabinets, the smaller cabinets will usually only take hanging rails & shelves. Choices are -

- Pull out trouser rails. If you have a lot of trousers these are great, if not then they use too much space. These need to be put half way up the wardrobe, not at the top.

- Internal chests of drawers. A must for most wardrobes but don't get too many as they are usually too low to use for anything other than underwear etc.

- Pull down hanging rails. If you need a lot of hanging space then one of these at the top of your wardrobe allows you to use all of the space. They have a handle you pull to bring the rail to you so you can get to the clothing hung on it, but these are not suitable for every day use.

- Pull out wire shoe racks. These take up a lot of height (a metre) & fit on the sides of the cupboard. They hold three rows of shoes & are 60cm deep, so are a great way to store a lot of shoes. You could have 2 (one on each side) of one of the cabinets & use the spare space between them for a laundry basket, boots or other bulky items.

- Pull out baskets. Another must, perfect for knitwear, jeans etc, as they are quite deep so can take bulky items. The wire design allows you to get an idea what is in them before you open them, & they are much lighter & easier to use than the integral chests of drawers.

- Pull out shelves. The problem with fixed shelves is that can be difficult to see what's on them at the back, which limits what can be stored on them. A pull out shelf enables you to see everything, so you could store double rows of items & still keep everything tidy.

- Tie rack/belt rack. Fit these on the inside of your doors & you will never lose a belt again. An inexpensive yet vital part of most wardrobes.

- A pull out or fixed full-length mirror. If you haven't already got a full-length mirror these are useful, & the pull out version enables you to pull it out to where you need it. Only available for hinged door wardrobes.

Designing the inside of your wardrobe can be done on your own, but really, it is best to consult with the people you are buying the wardrobe from, as they will have a clearer idea of what is & isn't possible in their particular wardrobe.

They should also be able to provide you with a computer generated diagram showing you how the finished wardrobe will look before you commit to that layout. But if you get it wrong don't panic, internal fittings can be moved around, they aren't fixed.

You can make sure you get the right thing though; by knowing exactly what you want to put in your wardrobe & how much room you need rather than being supplied with a standard layout that doesn't take your needs into account.

15 Steps to a Clutter Free Home

It's time to get into the habit of letting go of excess stuff, rather than finding a place to stuff it. Having to walk around stuff or over stuff does not make for a peaceful living environment. Let's go room by room and take care of some of the most common clutter problems.

1.) Kitchen: ask yourself what items do I use daily?

These items really deserve the primetime space in your kitchen. They should be within arms reach in the best location available. Watch out for space hogs in the kitchen such as multiple coffee mugs, plastic bags and cleaning products.

2.) Next ask yourself how many of each of these items you need to have a reasonable amount on hand.

Do you have 6 of something but only use one. This is a common problem. Setting limits will help you maintain an organized kitchen easily. Any broken, stained or chipped items need to go.

3.) Donate or discard your extra items, or in the case of glasses or dishes store them in long term storage until needed.

That is only if you have room in or for long-term storage. If you already have a long term storage problem go ahead and get rid of your excess, unless its an item that you can not replace like grandma's good china, in that case get rid of something else and store grandma's china. Remember to periodically go through cabinets and drawers to purge extras and replace worn out or damaged pieces.

4.) Clear your counters: the most visible part of your kitchen.

Start by clearing all items into boxes or onto trays. Take this opportunity to clean your counters thoroughly. Now put back only the items that you use daily. Ex. Toaster, coffeemaker, crocks of utensils. Only display decorative items on you countertop if you have plenty of space to do so. Otherwise decorations in moderation should be on the walls to save valuable real estate in the kitchen.

5.) Discourage paper piles from forming by creating a RAF file or as some people call it an action file.

A RAF file can be anything that can hold 3 files or folders. RAF stands for read, act, and file. As paper comes into your house you need to use your RAF file to place each piece either in to read, to act (meaning you need to do an action) or to file. Each piece of paper you save is important for one reason or another so you need to be able to find it quickly. Then of coarse there is the trashcan, use it regularly. You can also set up binders with clear plastic pages for things like receipts, recipes, take out menus, school information and frequently called numbers.

6.) Clean off your fridge!

Scale down or eliminate old refrigerator magnets or at least move them to one side. Clear everything off the front, put important items such as take out menus in a binder or in your RAF file. Save your kids best artwork in a plastic bin with their name on it, be sure to write their age on the back with an acid free pencil or acid free pen that you can find in the scrap booking section of any store. Once the fridge is clear, only put back current items.

TIP: Keep a wipe off calendar on the front of you fridge, update it the 1st of every month from you pocket calendar that you keep in your pocketbook or briefcase. That way you won't miss any appointments or meeting or double schedule yourself.

7.) Bathroom: Clean out your medicine cabinets.

Dispose of expired medicines and toss bottles of perfume, lotion and nail polish that are almost empty. Keep on the products that you like and use. Don't keep products that you either didn't like or were not effective just because of what it cost you. In the long run they cost you more in space wasted.

8.) Clean out stuffed drawers.

Ok we have all done it at one time or another shoved one more item into an already full drawer. Now it's time to change all that. Go drawer by drawer take everything out and ask yourself "Do I love this?" Do I need this?" Why am I keeping this?" The answers to these questions will tell you what you need to do. Then you keep it, donate it or toss it. By lightening up your drawers you will reduce stress and be able to find the things you need faster and easier.

9.) Clear bathroom counter.

It makes it so much easier to get ready in the morning and reduces stress when your bathroom counters are clear. This is also a time save because cleaning is a breeze. See tip #12 for the solution to where to put all the stuff you cleared off the counter.

10.) Use your wall space.

If you're hard pressed for storage solutions look to your walls. There are many options to create storage and reduce clutter on countertops. Ask yourself is there anywhere that I can add a shelf or shelves? Maybe a wall soap dish or toothbrush holder. Look on EBAY for hotel towel holders they hold 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels and 2 washcloths each.

11.) Create a peaceful retreat.

Most bathroom tubs and showers seem to be over flowing with bottles of shampoo, conditioner, bath toys and body washes. Again start by removing all items; clean the surfaces well with a soap scum-removing product. Then only put back the products that you use on a daily basis. Consider getting a shower caddy if you don't already have one and a stick on basket or bag for the kid's toys.

12.) Make personal bath totes.

Each member of your family should have their own container to store and transport their own personal bath items. This container can be a small plastic crate, a wicker basket or any other small container that can hold your items neatly. Placing each family members items in their own container makes it easy to store these things under the bathroom sink or in the bathroom or in the linen closet until they are needed. This also keeps their personal hygiene items together making it easy to find their comb or hair detangler and its no problem to move to another bathroom when company comes.

13.) Create a peaceful haven.

Your bedroom should be a place where you can rest. It is not the place to do work or other stressful activities. Do not allow things not related to sleep to accumulate there. This room should contain a bed, dresser, nightstands, lamp and maybe a chair or bench. Do not over crowd your bedroom with furniture it will make it feel small and will not promote peace. Your nightstand should be clear except for reading glasses (if you need them), a book or magazine (just one, not a pile), alarm clock and maybe some tissues. Start by clearing the room of all excess stuff, only put back those items that promote peace and rest. Donate or store extra items elsewhere.

14.) Remember the one in one out rule.

Once you have your house down to where it looks and feels good for every new item that you acquire you will need to donate, sell or give away one item. One for one, it's the only way to maintain the balance that you have achieved.

15.) Place 4 containers in your laundry room.

There are 4 containers every laundry room should have. Three of them can be boxes, bags, laundry baskets or whatever you have on hand. The last one is a trashcan. Label your containers, donate, mending, rags and trash. The donate box means that you continually separate out items that are past their prime but still have some wear or are too small. The mending means that you need to do a small repair. Rags means they have holes or bad stains so you can use them to clean or stain furniture, cotton or wool clothing make the best rags. The trashcan is for items found in pockets, dryer lint and other trash. This way it doesn't pile up on your dryer eventually making its way to the floor.

Declutter Your House - How to Clean Out and Organize Your Refrigerator

A cluttered refrigerator is not only an inconvenience, it can be down right nasty. If you can block out some time to get this done, you can declutter house and home by starting in the kitchen and look forward to a week of blissful refrigerator door openings. This is one of those small projects that can make a big difference on the efficiency of your home. Step 1: Empty the whole refrigerator

I know it sounds like a pain. But, might as well clean it out while you're at it. Take everything out and, and wipe the inside of your refrigerator with a soapy sponge. Open up your brand new box of baking soda and put it on a shelf somewhere in the back of the refrigerator. The baking soda will absorb odors and keep your refrigerator smelling fresh.

Step 2: Toss out the old and expired food

If it's wilted, smelly, fuzzy or expired it needs to go in the trash. This is your refrigerator, you don't want it to turn into a science experiment. It's a great feeling to know there are no nasty surprises hiding in your Tupperware.

Step 3: Group your food items by type

If you group all your food items by type outside before you put them back in your refrigerator, you can get a better idea of the kind of space you need inside to accommodate your items.

Step 4: Adjust your shelves

All your food is laying out grouped by type. Now you can see what items are taller or shorter and adjust your shelves accordingly. The top shelve should probably be left the tallest, to accommodate large pitchers and bottles. If you have a lot of canned drinks or large liter bottles of soda, you can look into getting special wire racks that either sit on the shelf or hang underneath the shelf to free up more space (there are many of these declutter house gadgets now on the market, so keep your eyes pealed at discount stores.) Allow at least one long shelf that reaches across the whole refrigerator for cakes and large baking sheets.

Step 5: Return food to the refrigerator in groups

Put all your sandwich making or deli items in one drawer. Put your butter and cream cheese items in the butter compartment (sometimes on the door). Put fruits in one bin, put vegetables in another (these are usually on the bottom.) Bottled items can go on the door, just make sure they are grouped by type; jellies together, salad dressings together, sauces together and so on. Designate certain areas for foods that have been cooked and only need to be reheated, an area for meats (beef, seafood, poultry), and another for dairy products.

Step 6: Maintain, repeat and expand

As beautiful as your fridge looks now, it will only be functional if you maintain what you've done by cleaning out the fridge once a week (tossing out old food and wiping it down.) This weekly habit will keep your refrigerator looking organized and clean throughout the week. Remember to put items back in their correct grouping.

ADD- Organizing Your Office Made Simple

Is your office cluttered beyond recognition? If you're ADD, that's very likely to be true. Papers may be hanging out of every drawer. Stacks of things may be starting to look like the leaning tower of Pisa. And let's not even go into the dust on your monitor.

Because of your attention deficit, you may not even notice these things. It's standard ADD behavior. But the thing is, if you're working in an office, your boss may look at your mess and think, "Promotion? Probably not." You don't want that! You don't want the people at home stumbling around your home office messes, either, especially if you work from a corner of your bedroom or another room that's used by others. Take a look around you right now. What do you see?

If your work area is what I described, the first thing is not to be depressed about it. There are simple things you can do to fix monumental messes, and they aren't painful at all. Think of re-organizing in "chunks," which are more palatable for your ADD brain.

First, take one spot, like the top of your credenza. Things you haven't looked at in 7 days and that aren't important should be tossed. Then, file things that you don't need all the time. Put a set of colored hanging file folders into your deep desk drawer or your file cabinet, and label them. You'll probably need the labels at first because your ADD brain won't remember what color is for what, but after a while, you will remember and the color correlations will make things easier--red for urgent, blue for instructions, whatever.

For things you use all the time, get a 3-inch binder and a set of sheet protectors. Put everything that you use on a regular basis into that and stand it up on your desk or put it nearby where you easily retrieve it. Then, when you need a disk or a sheet of URLs or whatever, it will be close at hand.

Once you have the first drawer or shelf cleaned, stop. Tackle another areas the second day and another the third day and so on, until you've finished. In a week to 10 days, your office should be clutter free, providing you didn't re-clutter the spots you've already worked on.

To keep that from happening, set aside a large space for yourself that's close at hand. You can use a desk drawer, or a basket or bin on top of your credenza. It doesn't matter. Just be sure that the space is large enough and that you don't have to get up from your desk chair to use it. Then, during the day, when you don't know what to do with something, toss it into your "everything" bin and forget it.

At the beginning or at the end of every day, take 5 minutes to sort through your daily pile of stuff. Use the colored file folders and the binder to keep things organized. Keeping this ADD-friendly system going is the key to your ADD-clutter-free success!

ADD-friendly systems are important to you, and they'll only work if you stick to them. Try this one and see if it doesn't work well for you.
